I tried to watch Hawaii 5-0 last night. There's nothing really wrong with it. Any gripes I have are even more petty than usual. But even with the cast differences, even with two leads instead of one, it's still Hawaii 5-0 and that's a problem for me.
I watched the old Hawaii 5-0 religiously for years. But I got tired of it. It was a good show, but I saw enough of it.
Let's see about the new one compared to the old.
Two white guys. check
One who was in Naval intelligence. check
The other relatively new to this assignment. check
Two Asians. check (Though the original Kono was pure Polynesian/Hawaiian and outweighed the new one by about 150 pounds.)
One accused of being a dirty cop. check
The other tied to a chair. check
Bad guys are nefarious foreigners. check
Nefarious foreigners kidnap civilian and cop. check
Let's face it, the old Hawaii 5-0 ran through a lot of plots.
The big changes?
I have a color TV now. Yes, I watched the first few years of the original first-run in glorious black and white, and quit watching before I got a color TV.
In keeping with the current stereotype, the partners have to bicker. Since usually that involves a female partner and a male partner, the new Hawaii 5-0 white guys instantly seem gay to me. No problem, I'm just sayin'.
People who didn't wear themselves out on the old show, like I did, should like the new one. It's a good premise.
If you did have enough of the old one, Castle is very good on the other channel.
