In keeping with last week's statement that there might not be any great teams this year, neither # 1 Ohio State nor #5 Nebraska looked great yesterday. No tears for the Buckeyes, Wisconsin has used linebacker-sized running backs for most of this generation. If the Buckeyes couldn't handle John Clay this year they couldn't always handle Ron Dayne either. A couple of weeks ago, sports writers were loudly calling Michigan St a poser in the BCS derby. Well, the Spartans probably only have Iowa to worry about to get to at least the Rose Bowl. Nothing is certain this year, but Hawkeyes also still have to play Wisconsin and Ohio State as well.

South Carolina's loss was very bad for the SEC. At 2-2 they are a game ahead of everyone in the SEC East in the loss column except, ahem, Vanderbilt. Auburn's victory over Arkansas looked like an embarrassment for everyone involved. I saw the infamous fumble live and would have called it the other way. I don't know if it would have changed the outcome. Arkansas' score was more like 2007 and the old holding rules, so it's hard to think Auburn's defense is going to handle Alabama.

I can hear the screaming in Nebraska from here about the officials in their game against Texas. Not exactly what they are used to. If Osborne or Pelllini griped in the past, well, things tended to even out. The point is that I don't think anyone in the Big 12 is listening any more. Only a couple of calls really looked suspicious and on one of those Nebraska managed to quick snap themselves out of a promising drive on a pass called incomplete that absolutely would have been reversed. But Nebraska wasn't getting any of the close calls. Almost as if the officials didn't like the fact there is going to be one less crew of Big 12 officials next year and blame You-Know-Who. Two big games in the Big 12 next weekend. OU versus MU and Oklahoma St. versus Nebraska. OSU - NU is actually the bigger game. It's a must win for both teams, while the Sooners or the Tigers can theoretically lose and still make it to the Conference championship game. OSU is faced with the nasty prospect that they could defeat the Sooners this year and still end up behind them in the polls and miss out.
