Canada cut off!

I went to the Post Office today and saw an ominous message that the Post Office was no longer accepting mail for Canada. What happened? Did we declare war? Did the folks up north close the border after losing the Stanley Cup? Nah, just a labor dispute up in the Great North. (Hint to Canadian postal workers: I know things are rough, but this isn't a great time to be playing hard ball - plummeting volume of physical mail to deliver and worldwide government financial problems. "We're entitled to..." may very well not work this time.

It's weird going into "Giant, Uncaring, The-Customer-Can-Like-it-or-Lump-it Bank" and get good treatment. Maybe if they'd spent the last few years thinking more about helping customers who need them worse than I do, they wouldn't have to make a special effort now to try to be nice. The nice lady tried to bribe me to get another credit card. No, thanks.

I made the mistake of going to the produce market this morning after the bank. On Wednesdays they change specials for the week and honor both weeks' best prices. People you'd swear never ate a vegetable in their lives show up on Wednesday. A store higher-up was standing in line behind me to buy something at the registers and cracked to the cashier, "Anyway to get these lines moving faster?. The cashier replied, "Yeah, go open another register and help check out customers." Not the smartest wisecrack to folks who're working hard.

The postal union was doing a series of one day rotating strikes which really didn't affect the mail, but then Canada Post itself locked out the employees and is awaiting back to work legislation. Most people here are shrugging and checking email.
