Yesterday when the news got out that Hostess intended to shut down, people rushed out to the stores to hoard as many of the endangered snack cakes as possible. Some even put the treasures on e-bay for insane prices. I hate to tell people, but... Even though they are full of preservatives, they don't keep forever. Take it from someone who once opened a sealed package and broke open a very old Twinkie many years ago: seeing green mold in the "creamy filling" isn't a pretty sight. I'm just glad I knew it was very old and didn't bite into it.

You could freeze them...I'm guessing. Although not sure that would work well.

Hostess was probably thinking...okay where were these hoards of people when we were planning on staying in business?

The Twinkies were at least two years old. I'm not sure they'd do better in the freezer. ;o)

Not your twinkies, the twinkies from Hostess...unless their twinkies are also two years old...

I meant fresh Twinkies wouldn't survive two years in the freezer any better. Different problems but the results still unfit to eat. ;o)

Yeah, I'm thinking they'd either get really soggy from the freezer burn or dry out. That's what happens with food that is frozen too long.

I dug some out of my Y2K stash in the basement once, about a year out. They were completely dried up. Not sure how something dries up wrapped in plastic, but there it was.

I'd guess the seals aren't perfect. Mine got moldy, yours dried up.
