I have to say that all the soapy themes that don't work worth a darn for me on any other soap opera, work very well on Teen Queen err Reign: The evil queen bee who spends all her waking hours trying to make everyone else miserable, or if they are fortunate, dead. The innocent young thang whose only concerns are so noble and pure you could puke. The slutty mistress who can't understand why her man treats her like a slutty mistress. The powerful patriarch who makes arbitrary decisions for everyone which the queen bee and the innocent young thang have to subvert for the good of all. Young thang's lover 'A' who she really, really loves, and young thang's lover 'B' who she'd really, really love a lot more than 'A' if fate weren't so cruel. I can see why true soap opera lovers might hate Reign because in its own silly way it sort of makes sense.

Just the facts:
I happened to notice that when Mary was riding away in a blaze of 19th century romantic glory, she was astride her horse. Checking this morning I discovered that her future mother-in-law Catherine de Medici was probably responsible for an improved side saddle design. And on the other hand historic Diane de Poitiers, yes, the very same Diane, was known for riding astride. If the show writers knew about this they could make some gossipy hay for Queen Catherine about Mary's choice of riding style.

Time marches on. The international intrigue in the episode is largely factual, though perhaps the chronology doesn't quite work out in this section of Reign. Of course Mary running away is stuff and nonsense. I'm not sure anyone was aware that Queen Mary of England was dying until after Scottish Mary and Francis were married. English Mary was convinced she was pregnant in late 1557, and I don't think anyone was in a big hurry to doubt her. Her health did begin to noticeably deteriorate sometime after the French captured Calais in January 1558. The warm sunny weather in the last few episodes does make it a little hard to believe it's December yet in Reign-verse.

It's a watchable show... still kind of curious in the ways that they (1) don't really hew to history yet also (2) do not go whole-hog alt-history either. The scenes with King Henry discussing politics are actually thematically interesting. Pretty much, Catherine is what makes it go, though...
