Sirius the cat is acting like a kid again. The last week or two he's suddenly become fascinated by sinks like he was when I first got him. He's very much interested in water coming from the faucet, and positively intrigued by the stopper magically going up and down. He was so eager for the show this morning that as soon as I turned on the light to put in my contact lenses, he immediately sat directly on the spot I normally use to work from and he stared expectantly into the basin. I'm not always a gentle soul, but I don't have the heart to shoo him off the counter when he's not causing any more problem than a minor inconvenience. So I worked around him. Being careful not to drop each contact lens on the floor, I take it out of the case and clean it. Sirius leans forward as the water comes on to rinse. I wonder if some day the water will splatter all over him. but it doesn't today. Both of my contacts are in and Sirius is very ready for the grand finale. The stopper goes up and the water whirls. Sirius leans far in over the sink to inspect the wonder. I quickly close the stopper and the water in the drain makes a loud slurp. Up pops the plug again and Sirius glances at my hand. He knows there is a connection between the handle and the stopper, but he cannot imagine that it is anything but magic. I play with the stopper for a while to amuse him, then walk away. He keeps staring into the sink, but not for long.
Most of you probably know already, but there are people who make a living off of creating Youtube videos. It's not exactly an easy job. They love to perform, but it takes a lot of imagination, equipment and preparation. Youtube (ie Google) wants to make money off it by selling ads on the videos of the channels that have the most subscribers and in return giving a small cut to the creators of the vids. Copyright problems are a continuing hassle both for Youtube and the vid producers. I don't want to get into to it, but in the last few days there has been a major uproar over who has the right to do what, even among those who thought they were paying to have their royalty issues properly covered. Another big problem is the necessity to have a thick skin. Trolls are everywhere and with little else for them to do, almost every youtube channel gets visited by them. It seems there are people who spend their days flipping between Youtube channels solely for the purpose of "disliking" every last video they come across. You'd think *they* were getting paid. Virtually every popular channel gets massive numbers of obscene comments on every video. Vid creators trying to judge what their viewers want to see more of have to wade through that garbage to find the serious comments. Sometimes it does get to be too much and video creators can and do get depressed or boiling mad and post videos expressing those moods which draws even more trolls.
Lately I've found that Youtube vids made by people struggling to make a start-to-finish bit of entertainment on a regular basis are more entertaining than what high budget professionals do on TV. Sometimes it isn't entertaining in the way the Youtuber intended, but whatever. In the interest of having more to write here I've decided to highlight a youtuber or two who keep me amused as a semi-regular series.
Today, I'll mention Ashens and JennaMarbles. Ashens is British and JennaMarbles is an American. JennaMarbles is one of the most popular channels on Youtube (nearly 12 million subscribers) , and most of her videos are made with her sitting on her own bed. Ashen's has about a half a million subscribers and 90% of his stuff is made with his camera pointed at his brown sofa. I don't subscribe to either channel but I do find them fun in small doses. The name JennaMarbles comes from Jenna, the young woman's name, and Marbles, her chihuahua. The name Ashens comes from the guy's last name. Both of them are comedians. Ashens has a magnificent baritone voice and presumably could do well as a professional announcer somewhere. Jenna's voice is, well, very suited for comedy. Ashens' gimmick is that he buys things from pound stores (we have similar dollar stores on this side of the ocean) and reviews them. Of course, if you've ever been in that kind of store you know that much of the merchandise is necessarily bottom of the barrel quality. So while Ashens pretends to be impartial, there isn't going to be a lot of good to be said for the things he reviews, especially from someone who obviously can afford a lot better. Given the season I present Ashens' Christmas Dinner in a can and ask you to think kindly of those who might be reduced to actually having it for Christmas dinner:
Jenna's comedy tends to be of the crude variety. Frankly as attractive as she is, Jenna in her videos is the kind of young woman I used to give a wide berth when I was of that age. Girls who acted like that in my day seemed to be saying, "I have several forms of VD and I'm proud of it!" But let's give Jenna the benefit of the doubt and assume she's just trying really hard to be funny. She's quite entertaining at times, not so much at other times. But she does consistently give it effort. Pride isn't her great sin. So she's not worried much about what people think of her character and I can imagine that she is vastly popular with young women/girls who wish they had the nerve to act like her character on occasion. Here she is in a video from 2012 which has gotten over 17 million views, Jenna's Drunk Makeup Tutorial:

What mine does, and many similar, is to toss her kibble into her water dish and fish it out. Failing a water dish, she'll toss it onto the floor and eat it piece by piece there.
