Once more Reign rose above the ordinary in the direction of mindless absurdity. But I have to say all of that was trumped by a promo for a new CW series! I forget the name of it, thankfully. But basically it's Alien Nation: the High School Drama Edition. This time the handsome outsider gets picked on because he's from outer space. But don't worry. He has a super-earnest human girlfriend to pull him through the rough spots. Boy, it must have taken many tough milliseconds to come up with the idea for this new series. If it fails to attract all the fans of cookie-cutter CW high-school-drama series, never fear, they can recast it as another spin-off of Vampire Diaries with ghouls in High School, use up all the left-over scripts and no one will notice.
Queen Mary had just startled everyone by suggesting to greedy King Henry that instead of marrying his handsome son Francis, with whom she is in love, that she marry his handsome son Sebastian, with whom she is in love. The idea is to save Francis from marrying (merry) Mary, which Nostradamus says will lead to his death. Despite the fact Queen Catherine is very much in favor of the idea of Mary not marrying Francis, she's not quite on board with the new arrangement of Sebastian being legitimized and replacing her son and future protector as heir to throne. This causes a big uproar because while Sebastian is a real bastard, Francis is a real son of a bitch. Henry decides control over three kingdoms is better than one so he accepts Mary's offer and throws Catherine in the dungeon.
In this episode, we learn that as Henry was off to fix things with the Pope, Sebastian has been appointed temporary Regent. Sebastian doesn't care about being king. He just wants people to stop calling him "Bash." Apparently Sebastian's first act as Regent was to establish a new constitutional monarchy with some weird rules. First off though Henry just threated to execute Catherine at the drop of a hat, the new rule says there has to be a trial with hard evidence. Second the King or Regent now has to personally judge all chicken and goat disputes bypassing any lesser courts. Third, nobody can become king if their uncle is/was a traitor. Too bad Richard III didn't have that rule in England. "Why'd I throw my nephews in prison to die? Had to. Their uncle's a traitor, after all." Could have saved all that nasty Bosworth Field business.
Among the things Henry forgot to do before he left was suggest to the guard that they not let Catherine discuss with her pals things like, say, killing the son he wants to succeed him. Fortunately, it was one of fake history's lamest assassination attempts, and only Sebastian's bodyguard was cut with the poisoned knife. And for all the harm it did to the bodyguard the poison might as well have been antibiotics. The attack upset Mary enough that she started acting like a queen for once and took away all of Catherine's toys and tapestries.
Anyway we meet a cousin of Sebastian's just long enough for Mary to discover Sebastian's non-royal family members are devoutly religious murdering crazies. But, hey, he loves her so it's easy to overlook these details.
We know from history that Sebastian didn't exist, but if he had, he'd have been a much better suitor for Queen Elizabeth, than Francis's little brother who actually did try to marry her. Sebastian was more her age, wasn't gay, and best of all he'd let Elizabeth do all the queen stuff without trying to be, you know, king.
