It's been a while since I've wanted to say anything about Castle. Everything since the cliffhanger at the end of last season has seemed a bit sub-par and perhaps a bit out of tune. Last night's episode was a reminder of how good Castle can be when the writing is spot on. It may well be that everything has gone according to plan for the series, but I get the feeling that idea for the arc has changed since the end of last season was written and shot, maybe more than once. I have no idea how they intend to resolve last season's finale, and now after last night I'd just as soon they'd forget it ever happened.

Though the episode was entitled "The Time of Our Lives," they might as well have called it "It's a Wonderful Murder Mystery."

You'd think that the sudden insertion of an alternate universe episode in the middle of a non-sci-fi, non-fantasy series, would be flirting with disaster. But somehow it worked without a hitch. There were clear references to It's a Wonderful Life. But it was a far different story. The other world was different; not as good in definite ways, but not awful. The only person whose life was a mess was Rick and even he was getting by. Kate was successful. Margaret was really successful. Alexis was disillusioned, but seemed independent and a perfectly capable young woman. The big idea was that Kate really is Rick's inspiration and that without her he's not the same and just doesn't have as much to give to the world. So from now on it's very fair to say that the show title Castle refers to both Rick and Kate.

I wonder if Kate is going to keep her professional name Beckett. I think it would be a nice touch. Having her answer the phone as "Castle" would be jarring for me at least.

The wedding in the sunset looked glorious even if it clearly was done in front of a green screen and if I got the distinct feeling that, considering the shots we've seen of Rick's place in the Hamptons, the sun had set in the South instead of the West that day. ;o)

(The MacGuffin of the episode seems to have been modeled physically after the mysterious "compass" in the video game Far Cry 3.)
