Thanks to a weird state law, cities can not ban the sale of certain fireworks. However they can ban using those fireworks. You normally only see fireworks for sale here before Independence Day. But you usually hear more being shot off at New Years. Presumably the New Years fireworks are brought in from Mexico. It used to be much worse: It is traditional in Mexico to fire off fire arms at midnight to celebrate. I used to hear shots from my house. Just a few years after I moved here a young girl in Phoenix was killed by a stray New Years bullet that had been fired upward toward the sky. The police cracked down and gunfire has pretty much stopped. Last night there were more firecrackers than ever. However it was all before midnight.. I don't know if they were shooting them off when it was midnight in New York or just any old time. But at any rate either they shot every firecracker off early or the police caught them, because as loud as it was earlier in the evening it was dead quiet at midnight.
