Because my eyes were so bad, I decided last year to put off seeing The Force Awakens until I got them fixed. So yesterday was my first look at it.

I have to say that for a JJ Abrams movie, it was pretty good. Star Wars with its more flexible mythology seemed to be much more suited to Abrams' way of doing things than Star Trek was. Even by Star Wars standards, he still has little respect for the laws of physics, of perspective and of common sense, but it wasn't nearly as annoying for me as that kind of thing usually is.

I honestly think The Force Awakens was the sequel I've been waiting for since I first saw the original Star Wars movie back in the 1970s. Most people think The Empire Strikes Back is the best of them all. But I didn't really care for its shift into moodiness that carried on into the third film. I didn't hate it. But for me Empire kind of forgot about the magic that made the first one work, replacing it with glitz.

Things that weren't so great:
1. I have a much harder time remembering the names of the new characters. I remember Finn because they kept repeating it. I couldn't remember Poe this morning though Finn kept calling out to him. Rey doesn't work for me as a name, though I liked the character. I don't care to remember Kylo Ren. As far as I'm concerned his name is and will always be 'Darth Loser.'
Joking aside I liked the idea of Darth Loser's conflicted character a heck of a lot more than the second trilogy's conflicted Anakin.

2. Who in the heck was Leia sleeping with? Darth Loser sure doesn't look like he was related to Han Solo. Please tell me he was adopted, and that his grandpa fetish is just a delusion.

3. Training? I don't need no stinkin' training! ... It was good that they skipped at least some exposition, but Rey just suddenly picking up Jedi powers after all we'd been led to believe about the importance of Jedi training was... a little bizarre. It wasn't bad that she was suddenly able to read Darth Loser's mind. Maybe I'm way off, but I sure got the feeling she's his sister or cousin.

Things that were good.
1. Rey looks suspiciously like Old Luke, whether she's actually related to him or not.

2. The new rogue character is an ex-Trooper grunt.

3. They didn't kill off Chewy.

4. They didn't ask too much of Leia/Carrie Fisher. She got plenty of screen time which was nice. Having Han running around and doing things was enough.

5. The new bot BB-8 is pretty likable.

Things that were silly.
1. Han just happening to show up as Rey and Finn are trying to escape from Jakku.

2. How many named Star Wars characters have to fall into seemingly bottomless pits inside structures before the audience starts screaming "Enough!" A great drinking game for this movie: take a swig every time a named character is seen on or next to a cliff, artificial or natural.

3. Bothering to have Rey complain about Finn grabbing her hand, just to set up having her grab his hand. Forced and more than a bit lame.

Not the last. May be sometime before I see it; though I seem to have got the gist of the story anyway. Mostly I just love the actors playing the main roles; love Carrie Fisher/General Leia AND Jar-Jar Binks (well maybe not love him, but I feel like what he must feel in real-life so much that feeling a need to defend him is almost an irrational response).

Not sure I want to see the film and have confirmed that there really the 'romances' are just roFANcies again.

But I will, but if I can find a way of wathcing without giving Disney any money I will.

But you're defintiely not the last, and I'd still much rather see it on the big screen, which would mean waiting for re-runs.

It's still in the theaters where I live, though I saw it on DVD.
