From a distance I saw a big spot near the top of this cactus. It's a deep red flower bud.

This cactus is about 150mm (just less than 6") across where mature below the bud and well over a meter tall (about 3.5'). A columnar cactus, it won't get any wider but left to grow it could get taller than the house. I really never expected it to bloom when I was around to see it. Saguaros for example don't bloom till they get gigantic. It's another night bloomer and the pictures of open flowers I've seen are not exactly gorgeous. For my own reference here is the bud.
