1. Do you have any channels you regularly watch on YouTube?
Yes, used to be mostly channels on games. Now there's a guy who lives in Illinois near where I grew up who does bits on history. A woman who reviews books. Another woman who explains topics in theoretical physics. Lately I've been following a professor of geology from a minor state university in Washington.
2. Do you listen to any podcasts? I really don't like podcasts. They just take up too much time, compared to focused videos on whatever, serious or not.
3. Favorite fast food chain?
Currently, Burger King. I only go once every few months.
4. What are your goals for the next year?
Visit my sister after I get my second vaccine dose.
5. What was your first pet?
We had a black cat when I was very little, but the first pet I took care of was a red cocker spaniel, that I loved dearly.
6. Have you ever been lost in your own neighborhood?
No, I grew up in the woods and perhaps because of that have a very good sense of direction. I've been confused about where I was heading, most notably in Munich, but even there I always knew my way back.
7. Do you like any board games or card games?
Yes, I own quite a few board games, and pass time playing various solitaire games to calm me when I'm nervous.
8. What is the last thing you watched on TV?
A bit of a Columbo last night. I actually don't like the Columbo show, but it's fun to see who the guest stars are. Last night the murderer was George Wendt (Norm from Cheers) and Rod Steiger had a part.
9. How often do you get hiccups?
Not very often.
10. What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen?
Crater Lake in Oregon. It was June, there was still a good 12 feet of snow on the ground on the rim. The azure sky, the white snow, evergreens down the slope and the deep blue of the almost unbelievably clear water. Amazingly beautiful.
11. Are you more sensitive to heat or the cold?
Probably humidity (which we don't have here) more than either of those. Can't stand hot and humid, and just about croaked from chilly and humid, one ATPo meeting up in Vancouver, BC.
12. What’s the most historic thing that has happened in your lifetime?
The moon landings.
13. What brand are you most loyal to?
I'm loyal to whatever works most recently. Corporations love to cheapen things to make an extra buck and my loyalty goes somewhere else.
14. What’s the most awkward thing that happens to you on a regular basis?
Can't think of anything.
15. What do you think could be done to improve the media?
Stop focusing on the lowest common denominator. Some of that is fine. But they all want to do what ever is making money right now. From the days of too many westerns when I was a kid to too many soap operas in the evening and shows and movies about comic book characters, it always gets tiresome.
16. What kind of traveling do you not enjoy as much?
I used to love traveling, but as I've gotten older the annoyances of all kinds of travel bother me. Sleeping in strange beds. Hours and hours of boredom driving or riding to get somewhere interesting...
17. What’s a common experience for many people that you’ve never experienced?
Getting married.
18. What did you Google last?
I think it was a part for my car, to see if an auto parts store locally had one.
19. What’s the dumbest thing someone has argued with you about?
The most trivial thing? Who knows? Arguing is always dumb if both people aren't more or less on the same page. Face to face, I tend to start grinning and get dismissive if the other person doesn't know what they are talking about. So understandably such arguments are short. I only have long arguments when both of us understand and kind of respect what the other person is saying.
20. What’s the most frustrating product you own?
At the moment I'd nominate the smoke detector on the high ceiling of my bedroom. Its battery died Friday, its dying wails scared the cat, it's poorly mounted up there, and it was a pain in the butt to get it to shut up and back semi-securely mounted, even though I had a spare battery handy.
21. What's the best concert you've ever been to?
Probably Igor Kipnis a harpsichord player. Who'd have thought a harpsichord concert would be that fun?
22. Do you need money to be happy?
Perhaps not, but it surely makes a lot of things less stressful.
23. What is something you do well?
Learn games. I usually lose them badly the first time I play, but I learn quickly.
24. How do you find new music?
I play around on my mandolin. I get music in my head and don't crave other people's music as much as most do.
25. What physical traits have you inherited from your father?
That's a laugh. I brought a friend to my father's business for a high school project. He met my father and one of my uncles there. His amazed reaction? "Everybody in your family looks the same!"
26. What physical traits have you inherited from your mother?
Not much physical. More personality traits.
27. Where were you raised for most of your life?
The outskirts of St. Louis, mostly in a house in a woodland.
28. Would you consider yourself to be in shape?
Nope.
29. Have you ever been in a car accident?
I was on a school bus that got rammed broadside by a car.
30. Have you ever been on an island?
Many times, from tiny islands in the Mississippi River to big ones like Long Island and Iceland.
