Honestly, I suspect the hatred toward licorice is often about prejudice against anything black. I remember going up to an express line cashier in a grocery with a bag of licorice and having her sourly exclaim "I don't want anything *black* inside of me!!" If you haven't already guessed, the punchline is that the cashier was African-American. When I was a kid there was a scandal about licorice being dyed with dangerous coal tar (re: item about Napoleon in video). But no one would try to sell that in this country now. Some strong forms of licorice are pretty difficult to take without getting used to them, and most of us would not want to. I tried buying some licorice at a candy store in Denmark. One whole wall of the store was dedicated to different varieties. I could see that at least some of them were salt licorice. I tried to avoid them, but I accidentally brought a bag of salt licorice back to my hotel. I tried a few pieces, but it was just too much salt. I threw the rest in the trash.

The good thing about liking licorice as a kid is that when most other kids fight for the red jelly beans (definitely favorite color prejudice), you can pick out the black ones at your leisure.

Circus peanuts, Peeps, Marshmallow Easter Eggs and other forms of stiff marshmallow candy never appealed to me much. All of them were sweets of last resort, bottom of the bag left overs... Yeah, my siblings and I ate them, but it was that or no candy at all. I don't remember Circus Peanuts having much banana flavor. Maybe the local confectioners in my area when I was a kid, used faint peanut flavoring instead. When I was seven or so I had to take some liquid prescription medicine for a few days. So I'd take it, my mother had them add banana flavoring. I don't know if I liked artificial banana before, but after that I didn't want anything to do with it.

I can take three or four pieces of candy corn, and then more is too much. Indian corn candy (candy corn with chocolate-flavoring in the top layer) is better.

My mother liked horehound drops as a reminder of her own childhood. You can still get them as "old fashioned candy." I didn't hate them, but don't buy them for myself either.

My odd taste is that I do not like sweetened peanut butter and chocolate. It really tastes bad to me. I'm fine with peanuts and chocolate, but not with many forms of peanut butter and chocolate. So kids' favorites like Snickers bars and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are things, as an adult, I buy to give out on Halloween, because I have no desire to eat them myself!
