My cat has softly snored before, it's kind of calming listening to it when I happen to be awake in the middle of the night. Dogs also snore and they sometimes growl and move their legs in their sleep like they are running in their dreams.

But very early this morning, my cat surprised me, it seemed like he was trying to talk in his sleep. Not words, but his voice going higher and lower and slightly louder and softer. Awake, his meows can be longer or shorter, but they all have more or less the same tone, and same inflection (unless he's yowling.) But this sounded like someone talking, the voice varying according to what is being said. Makes me wonder if what he understands from what I say is because of inflection. "You're a good boy" and "You're a good cat" wouldn't be different to him, but the way I say both might mean something to him. He doesn't come when called. But he might interpret the way I repeat his name when I go to feed him as having something reassuring to do with food (again not the words, but the way I inflect the words.) When I know he wants something besides dinner, I'll say "Show me what you want," and he'll head one direction or another toward something he does want and I'll follow. Does the tonal pattern register something in him or does he just want to hear me following him wherever?
