Smell-o vision.

I see from the paper that the Japanese are going to add smells to the movie theater experience. It's nothing new. It was tried here in the States when I was a kid, but was largely a failure due to air currents in the theaters from air conditioning. Some people couldn't smell anything. Some were practically choked out of the theater. The Japanese have probably worked out the problems. But it still seems silly.

The choices of scents might be considered a little odd, too. Not surprising the love scenes will have a flowery smell. But who came up with peppermint and rosemary for the sad scenes? Someone sad about their bad breath? Eucalyptus is going to be used to denote anger. Most of the folks my age remember the smell of eucalyptus from Vick's Vaporub. While I often didn't feel good when I was smelling it, I was never mad at it!

There's a reason television and film have been successful mediums. They give you a you-are-there feel without the down-side of being there. Remember the sense-a-round kick of movie theaters in the '70's. Feel the Earthquake as it's happening on the screen!

Um, no. We have amusement park rides for that.
