I usually don't have much interest in the doings of professional athletes. I like some sports well enough, but doubt the lasting value to the society of paying people vast sums of money to play games. But once in a while even I have to pause and give one of them his or her due.
The local major league baseball team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, has had some good and bad years in its short existence. For most of them Left Fielder Luis Gonzalez has been the best every day player on the team and was paid accordingly. Now as he is getting older the team understandably does not want to continue paying top dollar for declining ability. So well in advance the team told him to look for another team if he wished to continue playing, next year. Gonzalez did not make a fuss or blame anyone for bad treatment over the matter. Instead he's kept his sense of humor, continued to do his job and his work for his local charities. Today, a few days before the end of the season, Gonzalez took out a full-page ad in the local paper to say he was going to miss the fans here and to thank them for their support for the last 8 years.
Goodbye Gonzo, We'll miss you, too!
