Most barrel cacti are ball shaped and have yellow flowers. This one is a little different.

The flowers don't last very long. I'm glad to have caught them this year.

Oh, how pretty! The contrast between the thorniness of the cactus and the delicate flowers is lovely.

It is one of the things that grabs me about the Old Roses.

That, and their adaptibility, the scent of course, which will go into potpourri or waters, and is good for people, and then the hips.. high in vitamen C which can be saved as I am working with the seeds.

But then, what really catches you, someday in May, if it is not raining, are the flowers.

One of my favourite memories of my childhood is the smell of the wild roses that grow in Northwestern Ontario. The flowers are single petalled, but the fragrance is just out of this world. Plus the hips are beautiful.
