Most barrel cacti are ball shaped and have yellow flowers. This one is a little different.

Echinocactus texensis

The flowers don't last very long. I'm glad to have caught them this year.

Smile.

Would you mind if I borrow the picture for an icon?

Oh, how pretty! The contrast between the thorniness of the cactus and the delicate flowers is lovely.

Most cactus flowers aren't this lacy either.

Very, very pretty. Echino = spiny? The word "echinoderm" keeps coming to mind, for some reason--spiny-skinned?

The cactus itself looks like the model for the geodesic dome we have in Vancouver. It's a science centre and theatre inside that shoes those special movied screened in the round, and I can't for the life of me think what they're called right now?

Today is David's 65th birthday. I took him out for dinner and I had a dry, alcoholic cider. The first drink I've had, probably in years (oh wait, I had Bailey's Irish Cream at Christmas). Anyway, I think I'm about to fall fast asleep...hee!

Um..."shoes" should be "shows." Is it possible that I'm slightly...tipsy? From one cider. Sheesh.

Good etymology! Barrel cacti used to all be classified echinocactus. But they've decided most were a little different from the original ones described, so they became Ferocacti, ferocious-thistles literally.

Hard cider is good! I hope David enjoyed his day.

It is one of the things that grabs me about the Old Roses.

That, and their adaptibility, the scent of course, which will go into potpourri or waters, and is good for people, and then the hips.. high in vitamen C which can be saved as I am working with the seeds.

But then, what really catches you, someday in May, if it is not raining, are the flowers.

One of my favourite memories of my childhood is the smell of the wild roses that grow in Northwestern Ontario. The flowers are single petalled, but the fragrance is just out of this world. Plus the hips are beautiful.

I want to borrow it for a hat! Only the thorns make that a little problematic.

Hee! Oh, I thought maybe you were channeling Ed Sullivan. @>)

Happy birthday to David!
