Since hell is freezing over (ie the Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl) and the helicopters watching the crowd leave the stadium are buzzing over my house, here's a touch of spring from my back yard.

Just the tips are blooming now. Soon the whole bush will be yellow. One pic )

Most places in the US the temperatures get the lowest in mid January. Here in the desert it's usually the last week of December to the first week of January. I had my first frost of the season this morning.

The temptation of living in a place like this is to grow tropical plants that don't like frost at all. 360+ days a year, it's fine. But, you have to be sure to cover them for mornings like this. Last year we had temperatures in the 20's for several hours two days in a row which is too cold for just covering them. I bring some plants inside, but I don't have room for all of them. 1 picture )

I was out pulling weeds this morning when I noticed something red on top of one of my cactus clumps, It looked like fruit from a distance but closer up it looked like it was throwing a party. One picture )

My sister called me very early this morning before I was dressed. One of *her* cactus had bloomed and she wanted me to come see it. I knew which one, so I threw on some clothes and drove over without shaving. Three pics )

Here's the one I've been waiting for plus another that bloomed yesterday morning 2 pics )

Another of my yucca has started to develop a bloom stalk, near the one I showed the other day.. I've been waiting for several years for this one to bloom. It's one of the most prominent plants looking out my back window.

I'd started worrying whether the local bees had succumbed to the problems that have been killing off bees all over the country. But since the weather has turned warm they are visiting my fairy dusters, and senna bushes like they should.

I'd like to show you all a picture of one of my neighbor's agave, which shot up a bloom stalk nearly as tall as the palm tree next to it. But we've had burglaries in the neighborhood this week and I would not want to look like I was casing his home. In its place here's the pink fairy duster from the other day in full pink, fuzzy glory 1 pic )

From the grocery store, today's labor saving device of the day: Fellow fruit salad chefs, you all know the feeling. You've peeled that banana and then you've got that laborious and tedious task of cutting it up the short way into bite-sized pieces. Slave no more with the miracle banana slicer. Now, you've seen cheap imitations of these in stores before, and left them right where you saw them. But this non-adjustable one is dishwasher safe, cause you know you're going to use it every day, and set just right so you get the same, slightly-inconvenient-to-put-in-your-mouth pieces every time! (Makes you wish the store manager would wander by so you could point and giggle.)

Happily not just the weeds have been busy this winter. I've been keeping my eye on one of my cacti that seems like it's been ready to bloom for a week. It has bloomed yet, but I turned around, opened my eyes for once and saw others blooming. 3 Pics )
